Literary Conventions for Memoir and Creative Nonfiction with Jill Swenson
Devices and techniques used in nonfiction narratives will be covered in this class intended for those who are writing memoir or creative nonfiction. Participants will learn how to deepen characters, write effective dialogue, sequence scenes with storyboarding, develop themes, threads, and throughlines, find your voice, build tension and raise the stakes through exposing the narrator’s vulnerabilities. These literary conventions will be demonstrated using examples and brief excerpts from popular memoirs. Those with work-in-progress will have an opportunity to apply these lessons and share their work for feedback during one of the sessions.
